The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is aware of the surge in unaccompanied minors coming from Central America into the United States along the southern border, particularly Texas.
Pediatricians are deeply concerned about the status of these children and the Academy has been communicating with federal agencies and our state chapters to gather information and offer assistance. In addition to ensuring the medical and mental health needs of these children are being met, steps must be taken to provide for their safety and well-being after the initial assessment and placement.
The AAP considers this a humanitarian crisis and calls upon federal and state policymakers to mobilize necessary resources quickly and with children's unique needs in mind. Pediatricians in affected states are ready to assist.
