Teen pregnancies have declined over the past few decades, but the U.S. continues to see substantially higher teen birth rates compared to other developed countries. The AAP recommends pediatricians make emergency contraception available to adolescents.

Cora Collette Breuner, MD, FAAP, a lead author of the Academy's policy on emergency contraception, discusses the recommendation, explains how the medication works, and gives advice on discussing sexual activity with your teenager.
