Section 504 and IDEA Coverage

If it is determined that my child is eligible for Section 504 coverage, will she be automatically eligible for IDEA services as well?

No. The 2 programs differ in their eligibility requirements and in their assessment and implementation processes. Your best plan would be to determine as best you can ahead of time which program is best suited to your child and request an evaluation under that program first.

In general, a child with ADHD who requires special education services who has a coexisting disability or experiences serious and frequent behavior problems at school is best suited for IDEA coverage. A child whose needs are less severe may find suitable coverage under the less stringent and more inclusive requirements of Section 504.
