The study, “Injuries Associated with Cribs, Playpens, and Bassinets Among Young Children in the United States, 1990-2008,” in the March 2011 issue of Pediatrics (published online Feb. 17), examined crib, playpen and bassinet injuries between 1990 and 2008.
During that time, an estimated 181,654 children younger than 2 years were treated in U.S. emergency departments for injuries related to cribs, playpens and bassinets. The majority of these injuries involved cribs, and the most common type of injury involved falls.
The authors point out that this study highlights the need for continued improvement in product design and acts as a reminder for parents to be aware of proper and safe use of these products.
