Healthy Children Radio: Kids and Contact Sports (Audio)

Both the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Canadian Pediatric Society say that children and adolescents should not participate in the sport of boxing. Boxing is a collision sport in which winning is based on the number and force of punches successfully landed on an opponent's head and/or body. This deliberately exposes boxing participants to potentially devastating neurologic and ocular injuries.

Claire LeBlanc, MD, FAAP, a pediatrician and sports medicine specialist, comes on the show to discuss the boxing guidelines and how to avoid injuries in other similarly dangerous contact sports.
