Our Mission

On Monday, Oct. 22, at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference & Exhibition, Thomas K. McInerny, MD, FAAP, will take office as the 2012-2013 president of the AAP, after serving a year as president-elect. His induction will take place with an address at the annual business luncheon at 12:30 p.m. in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.

Dr. McInerny has been a primary care pediatrician in private practice at Panorama Pediatric Group in Rochester, N.Y., for 40 years and is professor and Associate Chair for Clinical Affairs in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center and Golisano Children's Hospital. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Medical School and did his pediatric residency training at Cincinnati Children's Hospital and Children's Hospital Boston.

While in office, Dr. McInerny's "to do" list includes:

  • Affordable Care Act: Put the Affordable Care Act's provisions into practice, achieving the goal of increasing the number of children with first-rate health insurance and ensuring that pediatricians are paid appropriately for ALL of their activities in providing high quality preventive care and coordinating the care of children with chronic illnesses in a well-functioning medical home.
  • Continuous Quality Improvement: Develop new ways for pediatricians to improve the quality of care for all their patients by providing them with the appropriate tools and resources, such as electronic health records, registries, systems for tracking lab tests, imaging studies, referrals, and reminder/recall systems.
  • Global Child Health: Continue to improve global child health by working with international pediatric societies, governmental and non-governmental organizations to reduce infant mortality and increase immunization rates.

"The AAP is the leading organization in the world 'Dedicated to the Health of All Children' thanks to many years hard work of its members and staff. It is indeed an honor and privilege to follow all of the inspiring past presidents and to have the opportunity to work with our dedicated members and staff as we endeavor to improve the health of children and pediatricians' satisfaction with their practices."

Dr. McInerny has held many elected and appointed positions in the AAP, and is editor-in-chief of the AAP Textbook of Pediatric Care and Pediatric Care Online. He served on the AAP Task Force on Mental Health, which developed the AAP Mental Health Toolkit and was one of the authors of the EQIPP module on the medical home. He is a member of the American Pediatric Society, the Academic Pediatric Association, and a certified physician executive and fellow of the American College of Physician Executives. He served on the board of directors and was chief medical officer of the Rochester Community Individual Practice Association serving 500,000 patients.

Dr. McInerny and his "greatest support," his wife, Beverly, have been married for 47 years and have four wonderful children and five terrific grandchildren.
