What would it mean for my child if another child—say one whose parents don’t believe in immunization—brings measles to preschool?
The answer to this question depends on whether your child has been immunized. If so, your child will be protected. The exception to this is a child who doesn’t respond to the vaccination. This occurs in about 5% of children and it is the reason that all children receive a second shot. Therefore, there would be a small risk that a child who received a single shot might get measles after being exposed.
What is even more important is what could happen to a child with an immune problem who couldn’t be immunized. That child would not only get measles but would probably have a serious case.
