Where We Stand: Alcohol During Pregnancy

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy is one of the leading preventable causes of birth defectsintellectual disabilities, and other developmental disorders in newborns.

  • There is no amount of alcohol during pregnancy that is risk-free

  • There is no kind of alcohol during pregnancy that is risk-free

  • There is no time during pregnancy when alcohol consumption is risk-free

For that reason, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that women who are pregnant, or who are planning to become pregnant, abstain from drinking alcoholic beverages of any kind.
